How not to exercise with two kids

One of the many excuses I use for why I don't get more exercise is that I have two small kids. I don't care how many clever six page spreads I see in Parenting magazine about using a baby as a barbell. I find it difficult to exercise when my children are around.

Tonight I convinced my three year old we were going to do a fun exercise video. I may or may not have used the words "kinda like dancing" to sell her on it. She lasted roughly 10 minutes. First she couldn't understand why Denise Austin skips the number one when she counts, "To the left, two, three, four." Then, there really wasn't any music. And there definitely wasn't any jamming out. Mostly there was stretching. And then it got hard. And then my three year old was done. So she stood over me explaining that this wasn't dancing. Eventually she just turned the TV off on me.

My 18 month old was even less cooperative. There was neck clinging during toe touches. There was leg clinging when I'd stand up. My personal favorite though was when he sat on my back during downward facing dog. I clearly need a Plan B for getting my sweat on.

This is funny, sorry. I was laughing. You need Richard Simons or something, so it does sort of look like dancing. Denise is hard to follow even for adults.

Elmo should really come out with an exercise video. You could probably really use one with him as the leader. LOL...

Too funny. Yeah, I keep thinking about trying an exercise video with my 2 1/2 year-old, but I know it would end up the same way!

My husband actually encourages his climbing on while he does push-ups, so I have a feeling I am doomed for home exercise for a while...

That Elmo idea would be HUGE.

You know, I finally got smart and turned on music or put in musicals and we "danced" to them...trying to copy all the moves in a music video is extremely tiring, and my 4 year-old loves to dance!

I truly sympathize with you...I have resorted to a.)working out at 5:00 or b.)dropping them off at the YMCA nursery for 1/2 for some quick cardio

Oh I so know what you mean.

Even when they try to dance, mine end up tripping me. Much safer to just forget about exercise. lol

Oh I have so been here. My baby things any time on the floor means I am open for a jungle gym and she is always underfoot. I agree, we just put on Laurie Berkner and dance around.

That Elmo exercise video is not a bad idea. I'd be willing to try it. And my husband does the same thing when he does push ups. I like to call that showing off. Sadly, a 30 pound toddler on my back did not help me show off. It mostly made me collapse to the ground during downward facing dog.

I have never even attempted working out with my kids! I am sure it would be entertaining!

Yeah, I never got those "exercise with your baby" articles, either. I guess your kids would rather see you be a couch potato, hee hee! ;)

The last parenting magazine I got last week had a spread on how to incorporate a stroller into your workout. Give me a break.

Same thing In the Trenches. If Mommy is laying (lying?) on the floor, she's fair game. I'm immediately dive bombed. Ooof.

Dive bombed is a good description of it. My 18 month old especially. He tends to like to lead with his head which can be painfull.
