Tell Shamu to leave the light on

My husband and I are planning to take a small road trip with the kids soon. Sometimes when I think about it, I'm already ready to hang my head out the side of the car to escape the noise. This makes it seem like someone has a gun to my head forcing me take the trip. Which is odd since the trip is my idea. We're taking the newest 4 year old to Sea World for her recent birthday. Our 18 month old is sort of along for the ride. I pray he's passed out in his car seat along for the ride but we'll see.

The actual car ride isn't the part that worries me. Staying in a hotel is my concern. Specifically, our 18 month old screaming his head off at bedtime, other hotel guests complaining and the manager showing up at our door telling us to shut him up.

The newest 4 year old has never stayed in a hotel. Or at least, she's never stayed in one without sleeping in a car carrier. I feel certain the hotel room will be endlessly entertaining for her. The ice machine alone will impress her. Shamu's likely to make her head explode.

Last night my husband laughed in my face when I suggested we get a nice 4 star hotel off Priceline. Even he thinks there will be mucho screaming. And one hotel we looked at had fancy schmancy glass top coffee tables we feel certain our kids could either break or impale themselves on. Or both.

My husband is normally the optimist when it comes to traveling with the kids. When I predict doom and gloom he calmly assures me everything will be fine and we'll just shove Chicken McNuggets at anyone that cries. It concerns me that the optimist is talking about driving straight home after Sea World to avoid the hotel. I told him about the big wholesome family fun we're going to have. It's practically a vacation. Except shorter. And significantly less relaxing. But fun. Big fun! With hotel beds to jump on! It'll be great. I just know it.

Having just made a trip and stayed in a hotel for a week, it wasn't that bad. There were nights where they woke each other up, but the end was always in sight!

That's so reassuring to hear! My husband thinking it's going to be mayhem through me for a loop. I count on him to talk me down from the ledge.

My 4 year-old daughter absolutely LOVES hotels! When I told her that we wouldn't be flying to Disney she was so bummed, but then I told her that meant 2 more nights in a hotel and you would have thought I had said she could live at Disney World she was so happy!

Go to a nicer hotel that has thicker walls :)

I'm sure it won't be as bad as you think. Besides, they'll be so worn out from a day at Sea World that I bet they crash hard core anyway - no screaming required!

Good luck on the trip and you will have to let us know how it goes. I am staying in NYC over thanksgiving at the W hotel and am totally freaking out!

which Sea World is it? best Western Mission bay (san diego)boasts itself as kid-friendly. (this is not an ad).
Sea World tip: don't sit in front. You'll think you want to. But 4 year girls do so hate to be wet.

i know - Yes! That's one of the things I'm kind of counting on. We took our then 3 year old to Six Flags last year and she was totally worn out when we got home.

Christine - Thanks! I will definitely report back with how it goes. NYC sounds so much more exciting that Sea World though. And braving the parade I think you mentioned on your blog. So fun.

Caroline - I wish we were going to the San Diego one! We're going to the one in San Antonio. And I'm still trying to figure out what to do about sitting in front for the Shamu show. I just know my husband will want to and I totally agree with you that 4 year old girls will not want to get drenched. The Sea World site suggests bringing a parka and wearing that in the front row. So I guess maybe that's a possibility.

I wish you much luck : ) We try to get ground floor rooms when we have to stay in hotels so we don't get the complaints about 'stomping toddler footsteps running around' from the rooms below. Hope you all have fun!

homeslice - Thanks!

childlife - I like the ground floor idea. I totally hadn't thought of that.

I totally plan to email you. I would have emailed sooner but our schedule was just so not definite. It wasn't even clear we were going for sure until like Wednesday. I tried backing out claiming I was tired but Scott was suddenly Mr. Let's Get Out of Dodge.
